Top 5 Travel Items for Babies & Toddlers

We've been traveling with our kids for almost 3 years. Our youngest isn't even three years old yet and has visited 13 countries and spent over half of her life living away from Canada!

While we love to travel, we also like to travel fairly minimally and don't love to take a ton of stuff with us. That being said, we have a few favorites that we've had for the entire time and continue to use (or just stopped recently!).

I hate posts that just try to get you to buy a ton of stuff from Amazon, so I'm not adding any fluff here. It's just stuff we've used on 50+ road trips, flights, and more with our baby and toddler.

Some of these are affiliate links but most we just love!

If you'd like a link to order many of the items from Amazon directly, you'll find that here

1. Ergobaby Metro Stroller (+ Ride Along Board):

Why we love it:

We chose it as our compact travel stroller because it lays flat, has an adjustable foot rest, large storage basket, and folds to fit in an overhead bin.

We’ve had this travel stroller for 3 years, and it’s become our daily stroller! I know it's a bit expensive, but we bought it on sale 3 years ago when the price was a lot lower, too. There is a fancier model called the Metro+ available as well.

Last year we added the Ride Along Board and it's been great, although a bit loud and heavy. If you've got a baby and a toddler, or two toddlers, it's a great addition!

2. Travel High Chair:

Why we love it: So many Airbnbs and restaurants don’t have high chairs, and this turns any chair into a high chair. Plus, it folds up to fit in a purse or diaper bag and it’s machine washable (although we clearly had not washed it in this photo!)

We stopped using this when Mila turned 2.5, but it was a game changer!

3. Ride Safer Travel Vest

Get $11USD off your vest by using our affiliate link above!
Why we love it:
Car seats and travel are a VERY complex topic. What's legal in Canada/the US is not in Europe and other countries, but renting a car seat is sketchy, too. We love the Ridesafer Vest because it’s approved in both Canada and the USA for use as a car seat alternative and it's super easy to travel with.

It’s great for taxi rides and comes with a top tether to keep the child secure, and a crotch strap and carry bag.We try to pair it with a booster seat when we can. It is safe, legal, convenient travel car seat. The RideSafer vest is  Crash Tested and Safety Certified. RideSafer meets or exceeds Federal standards in FMVSS 213.

We STILL use this one. Arguably Murphy was a little young at 2.5 years old when we started using one, but he fits it well now.

4. Jan and Jul Quick Dry Water Repellent Bucket Hats

Why we love it: These hats are adjustable around the chin AND head with a “grow with me” design and last from 2-6 years (and can go even longer!), have UPF protection, and are water resistant.

Our kids have had these for over 2 years and wear them all the time.

5. Slumberpod + Guava Lotus Travel Crib

Why we love it: The Guava Lotus both sets up and folds down in less than a minute, and can be a carry-on! The Slumberpod is perfect if you will be sharing a hotel room with your little one (pair it with a travel sound machine - we've had this one for 3 years) or if your child likes complete darkness.

The Guava Lotus is unfortunately only available in the US, but we love this crib. It was actually Mila’s bed even at home for almost 2 years! We didn’t bring it with us to Portugal as they had a bed here for us.

Previously, we've used the Phil & Ted's travel crib and liked how lightweight it was, but it was cumbersome to put together and take apart, and the inflatable mattress didn't last very long and started to become impossible to stay inflated (or deflated!).

Now the Slumberpod we are admittedly a bit divided on. It was amazing when our oldest was young - we used it with him from 6 months old until 3 years old, on top of an inflatable toddler bed for months while we traveled. Our daughter, on the other hand, really didn’t like the darkness and we stopped using it with her before she was even 2!

Hope you found the list helpful in narrowing down your search for the best travel items for babies and toddlers!
