BEHIND THE DESIGN
Why I Designed This
This started with a little animal-threading activity in our Adventure Anywhere Kits. It was cute, but I kept asking: what if one little activity could do more? We worked with our manufacturer to add magnetic fishing and a puzzle base, giving the same pieces new ways to play.
At home, I'd invented Benny, a bear inspired by my son, so we could tell stories about hard moments in his day. Benny grew into the Calm Crew, including Millie, inspired by my daughter, and Hazel, designed by my son. With pediatric occupational therapist Dr. Calli Studebaker, we connected each friend to a feeling and a playful strategy, and Nina illustrated them. Engraved symbols and a parent guide brought it all together. Now children have five ways to play, learn and explore feelings in one little cotton bag.

What ages is the Calm Crew Puzzle designed for?

What are the five ways to play?
Children can build the wooden puzzle, catch pieces with the magnetic fishing rod, thread them with the included needle and cord, invent stories with the Calm Crew characters, or flip them over to explore the strategy symbols. There is no required order. Choose whichever game your child enjoys.
How do the characters and strategies connect?
The characters represent familiar childhood feelings, with engraved symbols on the backs of the pieces to remind children of playful strategies. Benny, for example, is connected to frustration; his volcano symbol can prompt volcano jumps and cooling breaths. The included parent guide explains each character and strategy. It's a playful conversation starter, not a promise to stop big feelings.
Do I need to know the Calm Crew strategies already?
No. The included parent guide introduces the characters, explains their symbols and offers strategy ideas. You can start by fishing, threading or telling stories, then explore the feelings and strategies together whenever it feels natural.
Is the puzzle just for travel?
Not at all. It's made for play at home, restaurant tables, waiting rooms, family visits and trips. The cotton storage pouch makes it easier to keep the set together when you head out.
What comes in the set? Are the pieces double-sided?
You'll receive the wooden puzzle base, eight illustrated wooden pieces (six Calm Crew friends plus airplane and suitcase pieces), a magnetic fishing rod, a threading needle and cord, the Calm Crew parent guide and a cotton storage pouch. The pieces feature engraved symbols on the back that connect to the guide.
How is this different from a regular wooden puzzle?
Most puzzles have one main activity. This set lets children use the same pieces for five kinds of hands-on play, including magnetic fishing, threading and storytelling. The character illustrations, engraved symbols and parent guide offer another way to explore feelings through play.
Is adult supervision recommended?
Yes. Use with direct adult supervision, particularly for the small pieces, magnetic fishing accessories, threading needle and cord. Recommended for ages 3+.
